Book Review

Probably the most inspirational book I have ever read.  The obstacles Fred overcame to be a 8x World Champion are insurmountable for most human beings!  My hat is off to Fred Whitfield. - Keith Mundee

Fred Whitfield is my HERO! I just got done reading his book and I loved it!!! I couldn't put it down, but I didn't want it to end either. It is funny, honest, heartbreaking and authentic! It is a MUST READ!! It is the best $25 you will ever spend!- Arizona fan

I have just read Fred's book, it was a good read. I want to thank Fred for the memories that he shared and for those we had at the Moffett's. I remember Roy coming by my house on Saturday morning when my brother Phil was headed to a youth rodeo and we were roping the dummy in the front yard. I think this was the 1st time Roy tried to rope.
I remember a trip to Field Store on the 4th with Moon and Larry H. I knew even back then in the early '80s that Fred had talent. I like to think that my brother and I had a small part in the beginning. Fred would warm our horses for us and would rope with us! Once again, thanks for all the memories and good luck in and out of the arena. I hope to see you for many years to come. - Lee Maddox

I'm sure you get this a lot, so at the risk of sounding like every other fan, I just wanted to thank you sincerely for inspiring cowboys everywhere. I think your determination to excellence shows true cowboy grit. I haven't been able to make it to any of your rodeos, but I'm determined to make it happen. I'm a huge calf roping fan, so you've always been someone that I look up to.

(Oh, and I also am black, so thanks for encouraging me to follow my dreams, even if they are unpopular in society's eyes) - Fan from Kansas

My son asked me to buy your book to read for his English class. He is just finishing it and I read it too. As the mother of a calf roper, I think I have a few grey hairs to look forward to and coming from the Sandhills of Nebraska, he might have a few trials and hardships to go through to accomplish his goals. I had to laugh about you getting in trouble for roping someone....he too got in trouble for roping the principal's son. When he was younger he watched you on TV and "matched" you...flying from the bar stool, running down his rope tied between the staircase and tying dummy and throwing his hands in the air. The tying dummy still remains as a fixture in the living room and ropes are always scattered about to trip over!! I loved your book and thanks for the insite. - Nebraska fan

I just wanted to let you know that Fred's book is AWESOME!!! I love how it is written!!! My friend Jody Nix in Big Spring , Texas, couldn't put it down, once it arrived to him, that speaks volumes and he loved it. He's a huge fan of Fred's!! Mine just arrived two days ago, and every chance I get, I read a chapter, and I am thoroughly enjoying it!!! BRAVO to you for the dedication and such excellent writing to share Fred's story, and I thank you both for such a beautiful, REAL book!!! - Denise Pederson, Bentley, Alberta, Canada

I heard about your book from a friend and I just finished it in a couple of days. Wow - what a story you have Fred! Thank you for sharing it with us! It really moved me and I'm not a "rodeo person" - but I really enjoyed it and I think you and your wife, Cassie, are amazing people! Congratulations to you all on this book. I am inspired by your drive! – Fan in Los Lunas, N.M.

Gold Buckles Don't Lie is an amazing book! I read it in a couple of days and now it is being passed through the family. It's truly amazing that you endured some very hard times and still had the drive to become a world champion. Your work ethic is truly unbelievable! Fred you are and will always be a great champion!! – Fan in Fairhope, Alabama

Gold Buckles Don't Lie is an incredible book!! I read the whole book in a day.....couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Your life has been an amazing journey. Don't ever give up on more gold buckles. – Fan in Texas

I loved the book. I like how it was narrated from each speakers point of view. This was by far one of the greatest autobiographies I have read. Next to Alex Haley's Malcolm x

Well Fred, I just read our book, and what a suprise it was to get to chapter 14 and what a suprise!! I am honored to be "that lady" and that you were touched enough to remember my family in your book. That night I sent you off in our truck, I never saw you as a black man and still do not. You are a hellofa athlete and it's an honor to know you! I was thrilled to have you there for your birthday! The boys are now rodeoing at OPSU in Guyman OK, maybe we will see you at the college national finals! Stay in touch! - Kansas Fan
